The "flat port" designation refers to the flat, low-profile mating interface — the insertion opening sits flush with the top surface of the connector body, without protruding rims, raised collars, or rolled edges. This gives the port a clean, minimalist appearance and a lower overall height compared to flanged or rolled-edge variants.

The connector is typically available in both SMT (surface-mount) and through-hole (DIP) versions. In the SMT version, solder pads are located on the bottom or sides of the housing for reflow soldering. Locating pegs or posts are often included to ensure precise alignment and to withstand insertion forces.
